Punjab’s sugar supply and market situation remain stable as the province currently holds 11,937 metric tons of sugar in stock, according to officials. With the sugarcane crushing season starting on November 15, a total of 29 sugar mills have begun operations, which is expected to stabilise sugar prices further and potentially lead to a reduction in the coming days.
At present, sugar is being sold at Rs 179 to Rs 185 per kilogram across all districts of Punjab. To ensure that sugar and other essential items are sold at official rates, the Price Control Department is actively monitoring markets. So far, authorities have taken action against 64,355 profiteers, registered 498 cases, made 3,848 arrests, and imposed fines amounting to Rs 56.41 million.
The details were shared by Secretary Price Control & Commodities Management, Dr. Kiran Khursheed, during a meeting of the National Price Monitoring Committee held via video link. The meeting also reviewed the impact of recent floods on supply and pricing of essential foods, particularly vegetables and cooking oil.
Additionally, a Price Control spokesperson announced that the Punjab Institute of Agriculture Marketing has launched promotional training for sub-inspectors from four major districts. After completing the two-week program, the trainees will become eligible for promotion to Inspector positions within market committees.
