I share my home with eight rescue parrots and can personally attest to everything in this article. As much as my birds enrich my life, I strongly believe that parrots are not meant to be pets.

We have one bird who plucked himself completely (and permanently) bare in grief when his former owner died. Another bird who talked about her heartbreak for months after her owner of 25 years abandoned her in favor of a new wife. A third bird who has formed a mate bond with me and wants nothing more than to build a nest with me and make babies, a physiological drive that she obviously will never be able to fulfill. A fourth bird who obsessively bites her cage bars and screams because she never learned to play and socialize normally.

In an effort to control the huge amounts of bird dander, feathers, and discarded food that litters our floor we wore out two $700 Roomba vacuums in six months. There's no such thing as silence in our home, with three macaws equipped with voices made to carry miles through the rainforest and five smaller birds who chatter constantly. I've heard it said that a parrot is like a temper-tantrum throwing two year old armed with a pair of pliers and an air horn and that is 100% true. We spend thousands of dollars each year on food, toys (a large macaw can turn a $60 wood toy into toothpicks in less than a day), and the largest cages available. Fortunately our children are bird lovers (some of our current flock will likely outlive my husband and me, so planning for their future guardianship is a real consideration) but what if our sons grow up and marry spouses who like quiet, dust-free homes?

Despite our very best efforts, I know that our birds come no where close to enjoying the quality of life they would have in the wild, flying 50 miles a day in the rainforest, feasting on fruit and nuts in the treetops, and forming lifelong bonds with members of their own species.

People sometimes come to our home and are amazed at how smart and beautiful our parrots are. Next thing we know they want one of their own and are asking for the name of a local breeder. PLEASE think twice before bringing a parrot into your home. If you have to have one for your own, I beg you to watch Parrot Confidential first and then take the time to prepare yourself to be a forever home to one of the thousands of adult parrots who have worn out their welcome in their first (or second or third) home.
