A widget is an easily copied block of text. When the text is placed on your website or blog the widget should display something or do something. Examples of widgets are YouTube embeds, ReverbNation music players, WeatherUnderground current conditions or forecasts, etc.

An RSS feed is a way to syndicate website content. As the website is updated the RSS feed is automatically updated. A common use for RSS feeds is to add them to your newsreader. RSS feeds can also be used to display the website content with a widget. At relatedtogeeks.com I use a web service, rss2html, to widgetize the RSS feeds from out Tumblr blog, our Photos pages, and our Links page.

Not covered in the video are feed generators that create RSS feeds for pages that don't already have them. At relatedtogeeks.com I use the Feed43 web service to generate our photos RSS feed so that rss2html will display the pictures, not just the titles and the captions.

There are many other widgets, rss to html applications, and feed generators. Experimentation is the key and google is your friend. If a widget isn't doing what you want try another. There is more than one way to skin a web page.

It is possible to run your own rss to html service and to write your own code to create feeds or extract snippets from web pages. Here we really are getting into that geeky stuff like PHP programming I mentioned at the beginning of the video.
