STORYLINE:
Iraqi police said that Interior Ministry commandos stormed a Sunni mosque in western Baghdad early on Sunday, killing three people including an imam and his son in a 25 minute gun battle.
Authorities did not immediately release the names of the imam who was killed or his son. The identity of the third person killed was also unclear.
Police said seven other people were wounded in the fighting.
Armed men could be seen around the mosque located in Baghdad's Jihad neighbourhood.
One of the imams at the mosque, Shakir Mahmoud, blamed Interior Ministry troops for the attack, because he said the men were driving cars that were only used by the Interior Ministry and he said they were wearing military uniforms.
The walls of the mosque were scarred with bullet holes and spent ammunition littered the surrounding ground.
US forces blocked off the area after the exchange of fire, police said.
Police said the men attacked the al-Nour mosque in Baghdad's Jihad neighbourhood shortly after midnight and fought with guards for about half an hour.
Police said all the wounded appeared to be mosque guards.
Sunni Arab politicians have accused militiamen operating within the Interior Ministry's ranks of kidnapping and killing Sunnis, under the cover of fighting the Sunni-dominated insurgency.
Meanwhile in Kirkuk, north of Baghdad, police said gunmen opened fire outside the Shiite Ahl al-Beit mosque, killing two people and injuring two others on Saturday evening.
