Did you know? Zhang Guotao, one of the founders of the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army of China, and an early leader of the Chinese Communist Party, is buried in Pine Hills Cemetery in Toronto, Canada.

In early April 1938, after losing an internal power struggle with Mao Zedong, he fled the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region and defected to the Chinese Nationalist Party. On April 18, he was expelled from the party. In November 1938, he went to Taiwan, and in 1949, he moved to Hong Kong. In 1968, Zhang Guotao moved to Canada, and in 1976, he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He passed away on December 3, 1979, in a nursing home in Scarborough, Toronto, Canada (suspected to have frozen to death). He was later buried in Pine Hills Cemetery, located in the eastern part of Scarborough, Toronto. He was 82 years old.
In fact, he was not buried under the joint tombstone with his wife, but under a ground tombstone not far from the joint tombstone.
In October 1960, American writer Edgar Snow interviewed Mao Zedong in Zhongnanhai, Beijing, and asked him, 'What was the darkest moment of your life?' Mao Zedong replied, 'That was during the Long March in 1935, in the struggle against Zhang Guotao in the grasslands. At that time, the party faced the risk of splitting, and there was even the possibility of an unpredictable civil war.'
