Advanced Sylenth1 Techniques For Dirtybird

These past few months, I've been working on a brand new soundbank for you guys called Dirty Chicken Vol 3!

A Sylenth1 soundbank filled with inspired sounds from the Dirtybird label.
During the creation of this pack, I had sound design sessions where I learned excellent techniques to create some of these sounds.

Today's video will show you guys some of my favorite techniques that led to some fascinating sounds.

Technique 1 - Pitch Drift

While hearing some of Claude Von Stroke's songs, I listened to some exciting Saw Leads that constantly sounded like they were on the verge of going out of key. It reminded me of the retro sound of LoFi and Indie Rock that has gained some popularity within the past years.

To execute Pitch Driftness in some of these patches, we can use an LFO set in Free Mode, minimally affecting the pitch of the lead we want to apply this to.

The key with this technique is not overdoing it and applying it in a way where the pitch drifts between In Tune and out of Tune, being careful not to go into the following note in the scale.

When done right, you get this very retro-ish sounding lead that you can continue to design by using filters, effects, and anything your imagination desires.

Technique #2 Pitch Drifting Release

As the first technique, pitch Drifting on the release is another way to get a more eerie lead that drifts out of tune as it dissipates away.

In programming this effect, you need to make sure your lead has a good amount of release to allow the outcome to be audible.

After applying release to our leads, we can program a mod envelope to our pitch. From there, we want to make sure to set our sustain a bit higher up, so we don't get out of tune with the lead. From there, we can apply a tremendous amount of release to the mod envelope so that when we let go of the key the Pitch Drift occurs.

Again, this one is harder to execute but can lead to excellent leads. If you want to get crazier with it you can use the Ableton tune to setup a more intricate Pitch Drift.

Technique #3 Step Velocity Modulations

Some Dirtybird artists have been seen using modular gear that helps them create some fabulous FX Motifs. Modular is incredible, but the con is that it can get expensive and has a learning curve you must first master to use.

Using an ARP in Sylenth1 and Step Velocity, we can set up some cool effect modulations that lead to intricate FX sections for your House track.


Technique #4 Delay Rhythm Effects

This one is cool, and it's not specifically for Sylenth1. Using a Delay at 100% and playing with the timing on our Left and Right can lead to some very complex rhythms that sound cool and unpredictable. To execute this effect, you first need a sound and a pattern. From there, play the sound minimally and let the delay effect fill in the rest.

Technique #5 Atonal Basses

Atonal means the bass doesn't hold a steady key. So in executing these kinds of basses that you can hear in some Walker and Royce Tracks, you have to use a pitch envelope and set your decay high enough so that we never reach the sustained pitch. Doing this right leads to some basslines that sound super bouncy and freaky.

Technique #6 Chorus Feedback To The Max
Chorus is an effect that grabs your sound source, duplicates it, and modulates the timing and pitch of the 2nd sound source. When used, producers usually try to add a bit of Lushness, movement, and width to the sound. However, we can use it to create some metallic effects that we can then resample to use in our tracks.

These are some of the effects I used to create some of the more unique sounds in the Dirty Chicken Vol 3 pack. I hope you can use these techniques yourself to make your leads sound more interesting in whatever kind of music you are making.
