How to Set Up Linux Mint for Gaming with Steam, Proton, Lutris & Wine

In this video, I show you how to set up Linux Mint for gaming, so you can enjoy both native Linux games and Windows games using tools like Steam Proton and Lutris.

Follow these steps to optimize your Linux Mint setup for a seamless gaming experience!

🖥️ Step 1: Install Latest GPU Driver
First, install the latest GPU driver for your system. Follow the installation instructions here:

🍷 Step 2: Install Wine
Wine is essential for running Windows games on Linux. Install Wine by following the instructions for Ubuntu-based distros:

🎮 Step 3: Install Lutris
Lutris is a game manager that supports both native Linux games and Windows games via Wine, Steam, and other emulators.

Note: Lutris no longer offers installation via PPA, so use the deb file from the releases page instead.

💻 Step 4: Install Steam & Enable Proton
1. Install Steam through the Software Manager and log in to your account.
2. Enable Proton for all Steam titles:
Go to Settings \ Steam Play \ Advanced.
Check Enable Steam Play for all other titles and click OK.
3. Optional: Enable Shader Pre-Caching for better performance via Settings \ Shader Pre-Caching.

To use Gamemode:
1. For Steam, right-click a game, go to Properties, and add the following in Set Launch Options: gamemoderun %command%

2. For Lutris, enable Gamemode in System Preferences \ System Options \ Enable Feral GameMode.
