As I’m driving through these wide, open landscapes, I start thinking about how everything here began.

Who came here first?
It was the British navigator Captain James Cook, who reached Australia’s east coast in 1770 and named it New South Wales. Later the British claimed this was “land belonging to no one” — even though Aboriginal people had lived here for over 60,000 years. That idea, terra nullius, gave them the justification to colonise the continent.
The first arrivals were convicts, brought here in 1788. And it wasn’t until the gold rush that people began coming from all over the world.

Now we’ve arrived in Ballarat.
This is where the Australian gold rush began. In August 1851, gold was discovered here, and Ballarat instantly became one of the richest goldfields in the country. People poured in from everywhere: Irish, English, Scottish, Chinese, Europeans, and even Americans. Some came hoping to get rich. Others were escaping poverty, famine, or political unrest in Europe. Victoria’s goldfields were world-famous, and Ballarat quickly turned into a multicultural melting pot.

And me? Well… I’m not digging for gold today.
It’s Monday — and the place is closed. ✨
But that’s okay. I feel rich in life experience and in the joy of travelling.
