On the eve of armistice, Chips announces the deaths of Lieutenant Peter Colley, a former pupil, and Max Steffel, the school's former German master, making no issue of the fact that they fought for opposing sides in the Great War.

Goodbye Mr Chips was released in May 1939, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. Actor Robert Donat was age 34 when he played the title role and won the Oscar for Best Actor, beating Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind.
