Earth Overshoot Day marks the date on which humanity has consumed all the resources that the Earth can sustainably produce in one year. For 2022, this day falls on Thursday, July 28. The date has been steadily coming earlier – barring the occasional exception – since 1970.

Basically, we are in deficit. We maintain this deficit by doing these two things:
Number one: we liquidate stocks of ecological resources.
Number two: we accumulate waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

If the world’s population lived like those in the US, Earth Overshoot Day would land on March 13th.

It is calculated by dividing the planet's biocapacity by humanity's ecological footprint and multiplying the result by 365, which is the number of days in a year.
