EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Police have arrested an Evansville man on a murder charge in connection with a November stabbing death.

Elijah Andrew Johnson, 25, was arrested Friday. Police say he stabbed Byron Edwards, 27, to death at Edwards' home at 204-B Read Street.

Police interviewed Johnson on Friday about the stabbing after gathering information that led them to him, according to a police probable cause affidavit. The affidavit did not say what that information was.

Johnson admitted during the interview to stabbing Edwards "multiple times," according to the affidavit. After the stabbing, Johnson told police that he put on gloves and cleaned areas of the apartment he had touched.

Police found Edwards's body Nov. 22 after his relatives called worried that they had not heard from him in a few days. The relatives told police they could see into Edwards apartment and believed they could see blood.

An autopsy determined Edwards was stabbed approximately 20 times.

"Mr. Johnson claimed self defense but the evidence does not support his claim," according to the affidavit.

Johnson was held Saturday morning at the Vanderburgh County Jail on an unrelated battery charge.
