Rhus can be deciduous or evergreen shrubs or trees with simple, pinnate or palmately-divided leaves often colouring brilliantly in autumn, and inconspicuous yellow flowers in spring or summer, followed by small, spherical red fruits in dense clusters - R. typhina is a large suckering deciduous shrub to 6m, the red-hairy stems with large pinnate leaves turning red and orange in autumn. The Stag’s Horn Sumach is a well known shrub in the UK, it has bright green, compound leaves that comprise of between 9 and 31 leaflets, born on stems that are covered in rust coloured hairs. The angles of the branching pattern is reminiscent of antlers, and hence the derived common name. In late spring flowers appear and are candle like and yellowy green in colour. Following this, during the summer, the velvety fruit clusters appear, ripening to a red colour by autumn that often last on the tree throughout the winter. Staghorn sumac spreads by seeds and rhizomes and forms clones often with the older shoots in the center and younger shoots around central older ones. Large clones can grow from octets in several years. The fruit of sumacs can be collected, soaked and washed in cold water, strained, sweetened and made into a pink "lemonade" sometimes called "Indian lemonade".
