🐘🐘🐘 What is another word for an elephant nanny? Allomother.

Allomothers are elephants that assist in rearing a calf by providing comfort and safety regularly. The most common allomothers are young female relatives (female siblings mostly) of the calf. This study focuses on how much time a female elephant calf interacts with her mother, her sister, and the matriarch of the group.
Elephants exist in a matriarchal society, the head of the herd being female. She is usually the oldest and largest member of the family, leading her kin and peers with collected wisdom. Male elephants leave the herd during puberty, seeking out an old bull elephant as a life mentor, forming smaller herds that are solely male.

Females tend to stay with each other for life, every member helping raise calves, guided by their elders. Each calf is given support, guidance, and love by the older females in the herd, otherwise referred to as ‘allomothers.’ An allomother (aka: nanny) is a non-biological caregiver, performing all the functions of a mother, sometimes even suckling.

You would never guess this little rough and tumble bundle of joy was born premature & oh so tiny. She & her mama, Mae Mai, were rescued from a riding camp by our friend and partner Lek Chailert. They arrived at ENP on June 7, 2020. Wan Mai is now a strong, confident & very active baby. She has a beautiful nanny, Sri Nuan, but her mama probably wishes she had several nannies 😁
