Uses of Abdominal Ultrasound

6. Abdominal aorta: To check for aneurysms or abnormal widening.
7. Bladder: To assess bladder issues, including blockages or abnormalities.
8. Reproductive organs: In women, to examine the uterus and ovaries; in men, to assess the prostate and surrounding structures.
9. Free fluid or masses: To detect fluid collections (e.g., ascites) or tumors.
Preparation
Preparation may vary depending on the organs being examined. Common recommendations include:
• Fasting: Avoid eating or drinking for 6–8 hours before the exam to reduce gas in the intestines, which can interfere with imaging.
• Full bladder (for pelvic structures): You may be asked to drink water and not urinate before the test.
Procedure
1. You lie down on an examination table.
2. A water-based gel is applied to the skin over the abdomen to help transmit sound waves.
3. A handheld device called a transducer is moved over the skin. It sends sound waves into the body, which bounce off tissues and create images on a monitor.
4. The procedure usually takes 20–30 minutes and is painless.
Advantages
• Non-invasive and safe (no radiation).
• Relatively quick and widely available.
• Useful for guiding biopsies or drainage procedures.
Limitations
• May not provide clear images of certain organs if there is excessive gas, obesity, or scar tissue.
• Further tests, such as a CT or MRI, might be needed for more detailed evaluation.
