riondrum One Takes: An experiment in creative expression. With no plan, and only a simple drum set up, I record One Take of myself playing drums. I have no idea what the music will be that I will add later. Nor do I even have an musical plan beforehand as to what I am going to play on the drums. I let the creativity of the moment take me, and because it’s on video, I’m committed to what I played. Then I create music at my studio at home to fit with the drums. I’ll shoot additional video of me playing the other musical parts- and create a video from all of that.

This is all an attempt at forcing myself to get from A to Z over and over again. I’ve written music for years, but very little of it has ever seen the light of day, or made it other ears… because I suffer from what I would call “crippling perfectionism.” I would work on something, and it would never be right, so I would put it away, and often lose the original inspiration, and come back to it later many times, yet never to finish… So, enter the One Take series. I commit to a drum part, mistakes and all, and just keep plugging away the project until I have it up on YouTube.

This particular one, #6: Mr. Meowgi’s Magic was filmed in Tucson, AZ, behind my long time friend Khris Dodge’s house in his kid’s tree house thingy. Thanks to Khris, and his son, Rylande for the place to stay, and the use of the drums! I recorded several One Takes in Arizona, so the next batch will all be in some pretty cool locations in and around Tucson.

This is also the first use of my full-size green screen, and I'm lovin' what it opens up for me.

an iPhone 5 with a fish-eye lens, and an iQ5 Zoom mic attachment
Reason 8 as my music software,
Final Cut Pro X
