ABOUT HAITI: Port-au-Prince is the capital and most populous city of Haiti, serving as its primary commercial and cultural hub. As of late 2025, the city remains at the center of a severe security and humanitarian crisis.
Current Situation (2025)
Security Crisis: Armed gangs control approximately 80% to 90% of the city. Violent clashes between rival gangs and law enforcement are frequent, leading to widespread displacement and numerous casualties.
International Presence: A Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission is currently operating in the city to assist the Haitian National Police, though it faces significant challenges in containing gang influence.
Travel Advisory: The U.S. Department of State maintains a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory for Haiti due to rampant kidnapping, crime, and civil unrest. The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince frequently issues security alerts.
Humanitarian Impact: The ongoing violence has crippled the health system and led to critical shortages of food and water. More than 1 million people have been internally displaced.
Geography & Demographics
Location: Situated on the Gulf of Gonâve in the southern part of Haiti.
Population: The metropolitan area, which includes Delmas, Pétion-Ville, and Carrefour, is estimated to have over 2.6 million residents.
Port Facilities: It is the nation's main port for international trade, though operations are frequently disrupted by gang activity.
History & Culture
Founding: Established by the French in 1749 and became the capital of the colony (then Saint-Domingue) in 1770.
Historical Sites: Key landmarks include the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien (MUPANAH), which honors the nation's founders, and the ruins of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption.
2010 Earthquake: A devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near the city on January 12, 2010, killing over 220,000 people and destroying much of the urban infrastructure.
