Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen Shah) has officially resigned from his post on Sunday. He submitted his resignation to Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, in line with the legal provisions of Nepal’s local governance system.

In his resignation letter, Balen Shah stated that he has voluntarily stepped down from the position of Mayor with effect from 2082/10/04, in accordance with the Constitution of Nepal 2072 BS, the Local Government Operation Act 2074 BS, and existing laws of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. His resignation comes after being nominated as a candidate from the National Independent Party (NISP) for the upcoming House of Representatives elections.

Reflecting on his tenure, Balen Shah said he worked for the overall benefit of Kathmandu and its residents. He also wished Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol and the municipal executive success, expressing hope that leadership, service delivery, and development in the metropolis will become more effective, transparent, and result-oriented in the coming days.

Shortly after resigning, Balen Shah visited the central office of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Banasthali, Kathmandu. He was welcomed by RSP President Rabi Lamichhane, and the two rang the bell at the party’s bell tower. However, Shah stayed at the party office for only around 10–15 minutes before leaving.
