(1 Aug 2021) Thousands of supporters of Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro rallied on Copacabana beach on Sunday, echoing his call for printed ballots in next year's elections and his claims the current electronic voting system is untrustworthy.
Many carried banners and placards calling for "auditable ballots," and demanding vote receipts, rather than the electronic voting system the country has been using since 2000, which has been shown to be secure and free of fraud in past elections.
The questioning of the electronic system was raised by Bolsonaro as recently as last week, when the President raised the issue of the integrity of electronic voting, even though there has been no evidence of problems with the current system.
Critics say Bolsonaro is trying to deflect attention from his missteps while in office, where he is currently being investigated for corruption in Senate hearings, as well as mishandling the pandemic.
The president has suffered plunging approval ratings over the last year, and is well behind his main opponent, Luis Ignacio da Silva - known as Lula - in the polls. Neither candidate has officially announced they will run for the presidency in next year's elections.
