Japan's most RUSTIC ONSEN adventure // Hottarakashi Onsen Hiking and Camping

Hidden in the serene rural atmosphere of Yamanashi is one of my top favorite Japanese Onsen experiences. Involving a hike up a small mountain and camping over glittering valley lights, it is unusually rustic, but you won't easily find another adventure as unique and breathtaking.

Let me show you my idea of a great time.

Getting here:
From Shinjuku, take the Chuo all the way through Takao down to Yamanashi-shi station, from which one could either hike up to the camping grounds, or take a Taxi. If hiking, simply follow the routing directions Google Maps would give between Yamanashishi Station and Hottarakashi Camping Ground.

** The camping grounds are popular so reservations should be made well in advance via https://hottarakashicamp.com/ . The onsen facility on the other hand does not need any reserving, and as of my last visit only costs 800yen!
