In this video guitar lesson we will take an in-depth look at Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire" from the 2013 film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

In order to follow along with this I See Fire guitar lesson, you will need to tune your guitar to standard tuning then place a capo at the 6th fret.

The intro to "I See Fire" finds Ed Sheeran playing some guitar lines that use a lot of hammer-ons and pull-offs around a four chord progression. This can be a pretty trick sequence to get down at first. However, the hammer-ons and pull-offs are made quite a bit easier than normal because of the use of the capo. The capo gives the strings an extremely low action which will help you play those more complex maneuvers with a lot more ease than if it was performed pulling-off to just regular open strings.

This opening section occurs a few times throughout the song and is by far the most challenging part to play in "I See Fire".

As the verse appears the guitar work gets a lot more basic. There is still the occasional hammer-on, especial on the D chord, but other than that, Ed Sheeran creates a very sparse texture with basic chords and minimal picking.

As the song progresses you will start to strum the chords instead of fingerpick them. You can simply brush the strings with the back of your nails if you don't want to grab a pick. In fact, using a pick for the strumming may make everything sound a little bit too big.

So I hope you enjoy learning this nice acoustic smash hit by the great Ed Sheeran. It will definitely give most guitar players quite a challenge, but it will still be worth all the effort. :)
