In 2015, Starry Eyes helmers Kevin Kölsch & Dennis Widmyer became attached to direct The Exorcism Diaries for Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment and producers Doug Davison and Roy Lee. Based on the book The Real Story Behind The Exorcist by Mark Opsasnick, the film's plot centers on a young female reporter, fresh out of rehab and looking to make amends, who searches for the truth behind the most famous exorcism in history, but soon discovers that the real-life story is not quite finished, as her family's horrifying connection to the exorcism may be the cause behind her brother's increasingly violent behavior. Kölsch & Widmyer would also rewrite the screenplay, following prior drafts by Tim Metcalfe & Adam Simon, Jay Baruchel & Jesse Chabot, Barbara Marshall, and Mike Flanagan & Jeff Howard.
