Have you ever wondered why there are so many Thai restaurants in the United States?

In 2002, the Thai government began using a tactic called gastro-diplomacy, or culinary diplomacy.

This campaign effectively increased the total number of Thai restaurants from 5,500 to 15,000 in 15 years.

The thought was that by increasing the presence of Thai food, people would look at the country more favorably, and thus increasing their exports, and tourism revenues.

And it worked! This played a role in the 200% increase in tourists headed to Thailand since its start.

Don’t get me wrong, this is great news because I love Thai food, and I am excited everyone can try it, since it’s so accessible across the US.
