Horses need salt. Why do horses need salt? Basically the same reason humans do. For horses, salt is especially important in the winter to increase water intake which can help prevent impaction colic. During the summer months, salt is very important to replace electrolytes lost from sweating. I prefer to provide my horses with free choice loose white salt instead of relying on salt blocks. In order for a horse to get their required daily amount of salt from a block, they would have to spend a lot of time licking and gnawing on it. Switching to loose salt has certainly made a difference in my horses daily intake. In this video, I'll show you how I provide salt for my horses using a DIY salt feeder.
