Besides finding job assistance, veterans exploring civilian careers can also face obstacles explaining their skills on a resume. “One of the biggest challenges for individuals coming out of the military is putting it in a language where everybody can understand,” according to Scott Sanders, president and CEO, National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA).

WorkingNation sat down with Sanders at the NASWA Veterans Conference in Washington, D.C., the organization’s annual conference around hiring in the military-connected community.

Sanders says employers need to understand how military experience can oftentimes easily translate to the workplace. “ Veterans are great at following orders, obviously. It's the life of the military. They’re very structured,“ he says.

He adds, “They like that day-to-day routine and I think most veterans, when given a chance, can truly shine in a position that an employer will offer to them.”
