Описание к видео A Cuckoo in the Nest | 1933 | A Classic Comedy of Errors

A Cuckoo in the Nest (1933)

Released in November 1933, A Cuckoo in the Nest is a British farce directed by Tom Walls and based on the popular play by Ben Travers.

This film is a quintessential example of the "Aldwych Farces," a series of stage comedies that were incredibly popular in London during the 1920s and 30s, many of which were adapted for the screen by the same stars.

The plot is a classic comedy of errors. A respectable man, Peter Wyckham, is on his way to join his wife at a party in the country but misses his train. He bumps into an old friend, a woman named Marguerite Hickett, and due to a mix-up, they are forced to share a room at an inn that has no other vacancies.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Peter's wife and in-laws, suspicious of his whereabouts, are hot on their trail. The humor derives from the frantic and increasingly elaborate attempts of the two to avoid being discovered in what looks like a compromising situation.

For a modern viewer, the film is a fascinating look at a specific style of British humor. The acting is theatrical, with broad performances and reliance on physical comedy and fast-paced dialogue. The camera work is often static, reminiscent of watching a play from a good seat in the stalls, with few close-ups. This is a common characteristic of early "talkies" that were still finding their cinematic language.

While some of the jokes and situations may feel dated, the impeccable timing and chemistry of the cast—particularly Tom Walls and Ralph Lynn, who were the stars of the stage productions—still manage to land many of the gags. The film's primary value today is as a historical document, preserving the performances of these legendary farceurs at the height of their popularity. It's a charming and well-executed piece of its genre, perfect for anyone interested in the history of British comedy and early sound cinema.

Full length feature films. Classic oldies. Famous movie stars. Hollywood greats.
