Dan Margalit: Gil Lavi, you chose to spend the war, and even the period before the war, in Sderot. You've documented what happened in this town when it was attacked with Qassam Rockets, mainly through the mobility of Magen David Adom's Emergency Services. Good evening to you, first of all.

Gil Lavi: Good evening.

Dan Margalit: What did you do? Tell us about your experiences and show us some of the photos you've taken.

Gil Lavi: During the war I actually worked on two separate projects in the south. The first was a project documenting the lifestyle of the people and the landscapes of the south, and how these appear to the observer. The second project was the one in which I accompanied MDA (The Israeli Red Cross).

Dan Margalit: What is life in the south actually like?

Gil Lavi: Life in the South was quite empty. One of the most shocking things to me, and also the most touching was, of course, the children. I saw completely empty kindergartens. All you see are bomb shelters.

Maya Bengal: That's what we're seeing now.

Gil Lavi: On the other hand, you see elderly people dancing in the city. That's what I really wanted to show. I did not want to deal with blood, like most photographers.

Dan Margalit: This photograph is from the hill where you were shooting ... Right?

Gil Lavi: Yes, yes yes. This photograph is one of the most Surreal photographs in this series. You see the people in Sderot are basking in the afternoon sun, taking in the beauty of the day and watching the rockets fly overhead. Yes, it's one of the most Psychotic things. Yes.

Maya Bengal: What was your experience in the end? I mean, there's something you feel when you are always behind the lens. You do not really experience it, but you just record them. How did you feel? Did you feel disconnected? Or at some point did you experience your own sense of fear?

Gil Lavi: Usually what you say is very, very, true. Sure. I come from an advertising background. I'm an advertising photographer, not a press photographer by profession. But in this case, no. In this case I got the job after receiving many e-mails and requests from people I had known abroad. My clients and colleagues asked me: What is your country doing there? Why are you doing that? So I decided that I must show exactly what we are doing and why we're doing it. How the world looks from Sderot and especially how the world looks for this woman from Sderot who moved there two or three weeks ago from one of the countries in the former Soviet Union. And I saw her standing in an empty market.

Maya Bengal: And the shopping mall is empty from .. .
Gil Lavi: It was hit a few days earlier by a Qassam rocket attack and now simply stands there with flags waving
Dan Margalit: Gil, bring us into your photo story and tell us about some of the photos with MDA through the lens of MDA.

Gil Lavi: MDA was one of the most interesting things for me to deal with. When I got to the south there were all kinds of funny looking people running around through the missiles. They were even weirder than me and all dressed in white bullet-proof vests and were going out into the city in order to save the lives of people they did not even know. I met volunteers from Poland to Canada. I saw older volunteers who had left their homes and children in order to come to Sderot to save lives.

Maya Bengal: And was that strange to you?

Gil Lavi: It should not be taken for granted, in my opinion..

Maya Bengal: Certainly it should not be taken for granted.
Gil Lavi: I wanted to expose this fact to the public's consciousness. That this is not something to be taken for granted.

Dan Margalit: Where are you aspiring to raise consciousness? Among the residents of Tel Aviv? Among the residents of New York or Buenos Aires? You won't be able to raise consciousness in Iraq. You won't be able to project this to Baghdad.

Gil Lavi: Right. There are two parts. The first part about Sderot and the way of life in Sderot is designed first and foremost to arouse the Israeli public's consciousness and will be published both in Israel, and in other places. The second part, about MDA, was intended to provide motivation for more people to come to Israel and volunteer with them First of all, it is important. Sleeping in a shelter, like what this man in the picture is currently doing is not something simple and it should not be taken for granted that someone will do it. They deserve to be honored.

Mia Bengal: That's right.

Dan Margalit: Without a doubt.
