La forêt légendaire de Huelgoat et son chaos // The legendary forest of Huelgoat and its chaos // Huelgoat // Walking tour 4k in the forest //

A western extension of the forest that once covered the interior of Brittany, the Huelgoat-St Ambroise national forest covers more than 1000 hectares. The Huelgoat forest covers 555 ha. It is the third largest forest in Finistère.

Managed by the National Forestry Office, it is mainly planted with beech and oak trees that once supplied very beautiful barrels to the shipyards of Brest. On site, these species were once used to make hooves and charcoal.

The presence of different varieties of pine and fir trees can be explained by the reforestation that has taken place since the end of the 19th century. The forest was heavily ravaged by the hurricane of October 1987 (more than 300 ha were destroyed in one night) and reforested in deciduous and softwood trees.

The whole forest is home to a very diverse flora: callune, Osmonde Royale, black willows, blueberries and the Wilson’s hymenophyl, a small, mossy, primitive fern very rare in France and which finds its only refuge in the Monts d'Arrée.

A varied fauna: carabes, raptors and passerines, hares, badgers, wild boars, foxes and deer.

Over the centuries, the forest has developed a tradition of myths and legends born from the imagination of men. Our ancestors used to populate the forests with creatures from their dreams, fears and beliefs.

La forêt est indissociable du Chaos de rochers que longe la Rivière d’Argent.

Le processus de formation de ces roches granitiques s’est effectué lentement, sur des millions d’années.

These rocks are eruptive rocks. Born more than 20 km deep as molten liquid mass (magma), in an area of high temperatures (800-1000°) and strong pressures, they will rise and solidify by cooling a few kilometers from the surface of the earth.

The presence of this Chaos also has a legendary explanation to which the giant Gargantua, the giants of Berrien and Plouyé are no strangers…

The Devil’s Grotto, the Virgin’s Household, the Fairy Pond, the Artus Grotto… all sites with evocative names ...
