Video taken by a Stealth Cam G42NG.

This is a spot I keep an eye on each late summer because there is an ancient feral apple tree growing there. The spot requires a 20-minute ATV ride from home, and a two-mile walk in.

How that apple tree got there is anyone's guess. It's on a dry ridge point, and there are no other fruit trees around. I like to think a cowboy or logger once stopped there to have lunch, tossed an apple core in the bushes, and one of its seeds somehow clung to life.

A couple years after discovering that tree, I invested in some prudent pruning, removing all dead wood, twisted branches and water shoots. I cut down a competing red fir that was growing out of essentially the same base, and drove fertilizer spikes around its drip line each early spring. It has taken to this pampering well, producing more and bigger apples than before.

These bucks arrive like clockwork after every heavy wind, picking up the fallen apples, even though they aren't ripe yet. Those apples continue attracting deer into late October. Daytime movement diminishes after bucks strip their velvet, but several scrapes invariably appear beneath that tree during the November rut.

The problem with this tree is it requires wind straight out of the east to sit, which proves fairly rare during our Aug. 30 through Sept. early archery season. This westward wind is more common in November, during which time this site has been very good to me, resulting in a couple rutting bucks--one of those my best Idaho buck. During the early season, this spot is also challenging to get into undetected, as those buck often bed nearby. I have a plan for 2016, which just might work. Stay tuned, this could be the year I finally tag a trophy-sized, velvet-antlered whitetail!
