In this video, we’ll discuss the Number of Atoms in a Unit Cell, an essential concept in crystallography. A unit cell represents the smallest repeating structure of a crystal lattice, and the number of atoms within it varies depending on the type of lattice. For instance, in a simple cubic cell, there is 1 atom per unit cell, while a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure has 2 atoms per unit cell. A face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice contains 4 atoms per unit cell, and a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure typically has 6 atoms. Understanding the number of atoms helps in calculating the packing efficiency, density, and other properties of the material.
