For the third time since the beginning of 2025, a Russian Air Force Su-34 aircraft has crashed in Russia. The supersonic fighter-bomber crashed in the Nizhny Novgorod region, approximately 10 km from the Savasleyka military airfield.
Ukrainian military expert Konstantin Krivolap says that in general, from a statistical point of view, they are falling very much. But can we conclude that the quality of aircraft maintenance is decreasing? This is objective.
“In addition, Russian Su-34s are currently working very hard delivering KABs to the line of combat contact. And they are being asked to deliver more KABs, because they are a cheap weapon.
But they simply don’t have time, because we are driving them away from our border as far as possible. Remember the strike on the airfield in Marinovka , the strikes on other Russian airfields. If earlier they had to fly 100-150 km to the combat contact line , now they have to fly 400-500-600 km to get to the line of combat contact, drop the bombs and then return 400-500-600 km again. As a result, the number of sorties is less and they cannot drop the number of KABs that the leadership requires... If we develop ballistic weapons that can hit airfields in the Russian Federation at a distance of at least 700-800 km, then these Su-34s will not make sense at all.
Another point - we need to understand the reason for the crash. According to civil aviation statistics, 50% of air crashes occur due to engine failure, in 30% the cause is the landing gear. I think we need to wait for more objective information than we have now and, of course, we will not get it from the Russian Ministry of Defense, but it will appear. Someone saw something, someone heard something”, expert added.
He says that somewhere there was already a message from the Russian air force that the reason for the crash was the failure to release the landing gear. “Can we talk about the inexperience of the pilots in this case? Let's say this: if your landing gear does not open, the pilot has nothing to do with it. This is a problem for technicians. And the fact that the level of aircraft maintenance has decreased is most likely true. At the same time, the question arises: why didn't the pilots, say, fly into a corn field and land "on their bellies", as all Russian "heroes" used to do? Why was it necessary to abandon the plane and let the pilots eject? It was possible to approach the field, launch the plane at it, let the pilots eject, and it would then "rush" across the field without any control." But they didn't do it... When we drive them, we stress them psychologically. They make mistakes. And the history of war is the history of mistakes. Let them make more mistakes, let them make their engines break down, let them get more tired. In any case, the fact that this Su-34 crashed is very good. But efforts should be made to ensure that there are more such crashes”, he added.
