The 6 step is one of the most popular footwork movements when people think about break dancing. The 6 step sets a strong foundation for most basic footwork movements and is altered and evolved to create new footwork patterns such as 4 Step and 3 Step.

The 6 Step is a circular pattern that uses 6 separate steps. You can travel in a clockwise or a counterclockwise direction. You can think of the 6 step as having 2 parts.

Part 1: 3 steps to get to the back
Part 2: 3 steps to get the front

Tips for mastering the 6 step:

-Let your legs have a slight bend vs. straightening your legs

-When you hook in the front make sure you place your hand forward so your legs have a pathway to travel backward

-When stepping back to the corner from a hook, think about pointing your knee in towards the center to help flow into the next step

-Only use both hands on the floor when you get to the all 4’s position/frog position

-When taking your first step to the front from your frog position, imagine there is an imaginary line that your hand are on and step slightly past that line so your foot is in front of your arms
when coming to the front make sure you step far enough so your body is in front of your arm by "step in hook” step

-Try sitting on the opposite butt cheek of the foot that does the “step in hook” (right foot steps in, sit on left butt cheek)

-Stay on your toes vs. allowing your foot to be flat footed
Think about altering the feet you step with (right, left, right, left…)

-Keep your chest tall in the front and only allow your chest to drop towards the floor during the all ’s position
