CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A breakthrough device is providing new hope for brain cancer survivors, as demonstrated by the inspiring journey of Patty Young.
Diagnosed with a brain tumor after suffering a stroke at age 45, Young was determined to maintain her fighting spirit.
"When the tumor came back as glioblastoma, that neurosurgeon said, 'I need to get you to the best possible place,'" Young said.
That place was Ohio's UC Health Brain Tumor Center, where she came under the care of Dr. Lalanthica Yogendran, a neurologist specializing in neuro-oncology.
"So, we talked to Patty, and we said, 'Hey, there is this new device, and it is a device that sends low electrical fields of magnets to the disease area—in which we are trying to stop tumor growth,'" said Dr. Yogendran.
Further testing revealed Young had a grade 4 astrocytoma, making her a suitable candidate for the Optune device.
"I had just made the decision that I was going to fight it with everything I could," Young said.
The device involves magnets taped to her head and connected to a battery pack, allowing tumor-treating fields to be active most of the day and night, disrupting cell growth.
Young has experienced stable scans for two years.
"In that spirit of determination for wanting to do everything she can for her health, we're here now," Dr. Yogendran said.
While not a cure, the device has allowed Young to continue her roles as a wife to her husband, Adam, and a mother to their blended family.
"Thank you doesn't even begin to cover how Adam and I feel about what you guys do for us. I'm gonna get choked up, I know; you've saved my life," Young said.
Young now shares her healing journey and encourages other newly diagnosed patients, serving as an inspiration to many.
