📮 New Zealand 1915 – King George V Surface-Printed Stamps

In December 1915, New Zealand introduced a new set of five King George V stamps — the country’s first locally surface-printed issue. Produced at the Government Printing Office in Wellington during the pressures of the First World War, these stamps were simpler than earlier recess-printed designs, but they became everyday workhorses of the postal system.

The set included:

½d Green – postcards and printed matter
1½d Black – a new wartime rate
1½d Brown – colour change soon after
2d Yellow – bright, distinctive, widely used
3d Brown – for heavier letters and overseas mail

King George V, known as the “Stamp King” for his personal passion for philately, reigned through WWI and left his likeness on stamps across the Empire. These New Zealand issues stand as small but powerful reminders of wartime adaptation, economy, and resilience.

I've been collecting stamps for over 40 years now, mainly from New Zealand as New Zealand Stamps are my favourite. However, my daughter and I collect lots of different things and we thought it would be awesome to share with you some of the amazing pictures and points in time depicted by stamps.

I find it fascinating when I think of the journey some of these stamps have taken to finally end up in my collection.
