Now that we’re among car enthusiasts, let me speak some truth.

Choosing the Abarth is clearly the emotional choice. But is that really how we should make decisions when buying a car?

The Fiat 500e is a lovely little car. I just wish it had more range. I guess it’s simply too small to fit a larger battery pack. Batteries have made great progress over the years, so maybe one day we’ll get a proper small EV that’s more than just a toy.

And that’s really the issue with the electrification of cars. The original Fiat 500 was a car for the people — affordable and able to take you from Naples all the way to Milan. Today, most small electric cars can’t handle long-distance travel without serious compromises. If you want an EV that can go thousands of miles, you have to spend tens of thousands more.

As for the Abarth: I’d probably replace the seats. Then maybe it becomes a suitable daily. For short drives, it’s brilliant — you won’t even think about complaining. But over years of ownership, uncomfortable seats will make you resent any car, no matter how good the rest is.
