BEAUMONT-By Jennifer GordyRepublican Perry Thomas is a career prosecutor who spent 24 years with the Jefferson County District Attorney's office. "I've prosecuted every type of case there is to prosecute from the lowest simplest traffic case up to multiple death penalty cases and I've handled a number of child abuse cases," Thomas said.Democrat Bob Wortham is a former U. S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas. He's also served as a private attorney and State District Judge in the 58th and 60th District Courts. "I have tried major complex litigations to final verdicts. I've handled an office much bigger than the DA's office, one that covered 43 counties, a large portion of the state of Texas and I turned a do-nothing district into one of the best in the United States," Wortham said.Each candidate is hoping the replace interim District Attorney Cory Crenshaw.Crenshaw formed a task force consisting of the U. S. Attorney's office, the D. A.'s office and other agencies. The primary goal: to investigate public corruption including in the Beaumont School District."When I took office, I felt like the current ability in the D. A.'s office to address public corruption was not being met. There was not a dedicated team. There was not a vision for resources," Crenshaw said.Wortham and Thomas say the work of the task force won't end when Crenshaw leaves office."I plan to continue the work of the task force..uh..ya know when you look at public corruption you not only look at BISD you look at all public entities and make sure all public entities are following the law," Thomas said." I'm going to look into every faction of BISD. I will know every detail about it and people who should be prosecuted will be prosecuted. It is a sore spot in this county. I'm looking forward to it," Wortham said.Two men with decades of legal experience, shaking every hand, not taking any vote for granted.
