In a wide ranging and deeply probing conversation, the hosts of The Philosophy Salon, Graham and Ryan, discuss the philosophical issues regarding the developmental disability of autism with the inaugural guest of the podcast: developmental psychologist, Patrick Dwyer. As an autistic graduate student at UC Davis, Patrick’s research specializes in sensory processing and attention in autism; but his side-interests are wide ranging, and include inclusion in education, neurodiversity theory, mental health and anxiety, and anything else relevant to the wellbeing of autistic people. In this conversation, we examine a variety of questions including, but not limited to, the following. What is autism? Is autism a disability of deficiency or not? What’s the difference between Autism and Asperger’s syndrome? What is a disability?
