Abstract:
Since her introduction to the world music scene in 1969, Italian singer-songwriter, actor, and author Nada has released more than twenty albums that boast inter-genre experimentation in rock, pop, and jazz. Given the significant evolution of her sound, to compile a summary and analysis of Nada’s long and extensive career requires information on both her life and work. Unfortunately, compared to the widely-available scholarly material on Italian singer-songwriters who are men, minimal literature on Nada’s life and music exists. Nada’s recorded interviews, however, are easily available, and they lent themselves well to this project, seeing that they capture Nada’s charisma and sunny personality, which define her success as an entertainer. After surveying each album, and making use of interviews and articles, it became clear that Nada’s career and sound is defined by bold inter-genre experimentation. While in the beginning, she began her career as a singer out of family obligation, her role in creating her music grew to the point of her finally becoming in control of the art, whether music or fiction, she produces. What unites Nada’s music and career is this very growth in artistic autonomy and experimentation, in addition to her ability to allow her music to grow with her.
