The story centers on the White family – Mr. and Mrs. White and their adult son, Herbert – who receive a visit from their friend, Sergeant-Major Morris. Morris, returning from India, possesses a mummified monkey's paw, which he claims has the power to grant three wishes, but with terrible, ironic consequences for those who meddle with fate.

Despite Morris's dire warnings and his own attempts to destroy the paw, Mr. White retrieves it. Herbert flippantly suggests wishing for £200 to pay off their mortgage. The wish is granted, but the money arrives as compensation for Herbert's gruesome death in a work accident.

Overwhelmed by grief, Mrs. White insists that her husband use the second wish to bring Herbert back to life. Mr. White reluctantly complies, but as a terrifying knocking begins at their door in the dead of night, he is gripped by the horrifying realization of what might be on the other side – his mutilated, decomposing son. In a desperate final act, Mr. White uses his third and final wish to send whatever is at the door back to where it came from, leaving the Whites in a state of profound and desolate grief.

The radio adaptation excels at building suspense through sound design and the chilling implications of each wish, making the unseen horrors all the more terrifying.
