As part of the admissions process for the Oxford Mathematics undergraduate mathematics degree, Oxford asks all applicants to take the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT). In this video, we breakdown our top tips for preparing for the MAT to help you ace the exam!

✏️ Tip #1: Revise each topic in the official MAT syllabus practice document. There will be at least one question per topic, so don't leave any topics out in your revision. (0:42)

✏️ Tip #2: Practice past papers in untimed conditions first to build your confidence without the additional pressure. (1:35)

✏️ Tip #3: As you practice questions, revise the official solutions. You may find new techniques as you do this. It is important to consolidate and implement these new techniques, as they may help you save time in the exam. (2:10)

✏️ Tip #4: Make sure you write your solutions clearly and concisely. This will take practice. Each step in your solution should follow a logical sequence. You should review the official solutions and try to imitate this structure. (2:45)

✏️ Tip #5: Once you are comfortable, you can begin practicing papers in timed conditions. Each mock you do should be completed in 2.5 hours. After each mock, reflect on what went well and what could be improved. You can then implement this in the next mock. (3:35)

✏️ Tip #6: Time management is key. Once you figure out what questions are likely to take you longer, you will be able to think more strategically about how you divide your time. We would recommend quickly glancing over all of the questions in the paper, and identifying the ones that are likely to be difficult. You can then attempt questions in order, leaving the hard ones if they are taking too long, and then return to these at the end when you have had more time to think. (4:50)
