INTRODUCTION ABOUT OPEN-PIT SLOPE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN (MND402)

The open-pit slope analysis and Design (MND402) is an elective subject in the 7th Semester; that is, it will be offered in the coming Monsoon Semester 2023-24.

The subject is very much crucial in the sense that; Mining Industry is exploiting coal and Minerals, majorly adopting open-pit mining methods, thereby constantly creating new mine benches, mine dumps, tailings dam, Ash-Dyke embankment etc., that requires technical measures for the safe operation of the mining.

The slope is naturally formed, or formed due to human excavation, and is a structure that stands on its strength for a long during the entire periods of the mining life in the open-pit mining project. It is exposed to various instabilities, namely, vibration due to continuous movements of heavy vehicles, production blasts, rainfall, etc. Each sequence of events may lead to collapse if things are not resisted in due time.

The knowledge of rock and soil slope engineering is very much required to handle this situation, which will be taught in the course open-pit slope analysis and Design. The success of deep open-pit mining largely depends on the effective management of the mine slopes. The increasing depth of operation in open-pit mines develops more load on the mine benches on one side; on the other side, it generates a large amount of waste that needs to be removed to access the coal and minerals, posing a new technical problem for the mine management. How to handle this situation?

In metal mines, a substantial volume of tailings comes from plants and needs proper dumping space to reduce environmental hazards. Thereby, a new geo-structure tailings dam was erected in the mining lease-hold area to deposit the same under strict monitoring of the organisation. In the monsoon season, the stability of this dam poses a technical threat to mine management. How to solve this situation?

In coal-fired thermal power stations, a massive volume of ash needs disposal, which is hazardous in one sense. It requires storage in the specified space so that it can be used suitably without polluting much to the environment, thereby Ash-Dyke embankment comes into the picture. The stability of this dyke is equally a technical concern for the companies.

The numerical methods contribute and help model large geo-structure before actual actions, allowing the engineers to take the fullest potential for the stability assessment of these structures. This course will outline three different types of numerical methods used in this discipline with case studies.

To summarise the course, a few live mine case studies will be illustrated to guide you on how to use the numerical toolbox for actual scenarios.
