In this video, Dr. Smita Dhengle explains everything about Cervical Stitch (Cervical Cerclage) — its meaning, procedure, timing, success rate, and precautions during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the cervix normally remains closed and opens only during labor. In some women, the cervix opens earlier than expected, which can lead to mid-trimester miscarriage or premature birth. To prevent this, doctors place a Cervical Stitch under anesthesia in the operation theatre.

🔹 Types of Cervical Cerclage:

Prophylactic Cervical Stitch – placed early in pregnancy if there is a history of repeated miscarriages (15–24 weeks).

Emergency Cervical Stitch – done if ultrasound shows cervix opening or bag of membranes visible.

✅ The success rate of Cervical Cerclage is about 80–90%. The stitch is usually removed at around 36 weeks before delivery. After the procedure, doctors advise rest, progesterone support, and regular check-ups for a safe pregnancy journey.
