In this video, Keith Barker covers delivering public keys with X.509 digital certificates. Encrypting messages and transmissions is obviously vital to maintaining security and durability of information. But the public/private key infrastructure can be confusing, see how certificates can help spread keys.

Say you’re looking to digitally sign something – maybe a file or a packet. You encrypt it with your private key and send the encrypted information out to someone digitally.

But when the receiver goes to decrypt and verify the signature, they’ll need a copy of the public key that was used to encrypt it. A challenge of encryption is how to deliver those public keys.

One way that’s often done is with Digital Certificates. As part of the exchange between the originator and receiver, the sender can transmit their digital certificate.

A digital certificate has multiple sections and various information. That includes: the subject's name, the subject’s public key, a signature from the issuer — or CA, and some basic constraints.

Keith opens up a digital signature and demonstrates the moving pieces of how public keys get disseminated and used.
