Refractive Error, is a problem with focusing light accurately on the retina due to the shape of the eye.

In this video, we will look at the four most common refractive errors, which are.

Myopia, or nearsightedness.
Hyperopia, or farsightedness.
Astigmatism.
And presbyopia.

Myopia is the most common cause of vision impairment, impacting approximately 40% of the population. It is a vision condition in which a person has difficulty seeing objects that are further away, and they seem blurry.

This disorder usually occurs when the shape of the eye is too long, or the cornea is too curved. causing the light rays to focus in front of the retina, instead of on it.

Hyperopia, on the other hand, affects approximately 10% of Americans. It occurs when the refraction, or bending of light, is impacted as it passes through the eye’s cornea and lens, causing it to focus behind the retina.

This behavior is usually a result of the eyeball being too short, or having an abnormally shaped cornea or lens.

Astigmatism, impacts an additional 3 million more people per year, in the united states. This refractive error, occurs when the cornea, or the lens, inside the eye, is curved differently in one direction. Preventing light, from focusing properly on the retina.


Presbyopia, is an age-related disorder, resulting in the inability to properly focus on nearby objects.

This usually occurs when the eye’s natural lens’s flexibility decreases, and becomes unable to properly respond to focusing on nearby objects.
