The Indo-Pak War of 1971 reached its decisive climax on 16 December when the Pakistani Army in East Pakistan surrendered to the Indian Armed Forces and the Mukti Bahini. In front of the world, Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi of Pakistan signed the Instrument of Surrender before Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora of India at the Dhaka Racecourse Ground. This remains one of the largest military surrenders since World War II, with nearly 93,000 Pakistani soldiers laying down their arms. India’s swift and well-coordinated military operations not only ensured victory but also led to the creation of Bangladesh. This moment stands as a proud chapter in India’s military history, symbolising decisive leadership, strategic brilliance, and humanitarian support for millions of oppressed Bengalis.
