The Mahabharata is an ancient Indian epic that tells the story of a great war that took place between two branches of a royal family, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, over a disputed kingdom. The Mahabharata is considered one of the longest epics in the world and is believed to have been composed between 400 BCE to 400 CE.
According to the Mahabharata, the story begins with King Shantanu, the ruler of the Kuru dynasty, who fell in love with a beautiful woman named Ganga. Ganga agreed to marry him on the condition that he would never question her actions. However, after they were married, Ganga drowned all of their newborn sons in the river. The king was heartbroken but did not question her actions.
Finally, when their eighth son, Devavrata (later known as Bhishma), was born, the king could no longer bear the loss of his children and questioned Ganga's actions. She revealed that she was a river goddess and had drowned their sons to free them from a curse. She promised to spare Devavrata's life, and he grew up to be a wise and learned prince.
Years later, King Shantanu fell in love with another woman named Satyavati, who was the daughter of a fisherman. The fisherman agreed to let his daughter marry the king on the condition that her children would inherit the throne. However, Devavrata, who had pledged to never marry and never have children to ensure that Satyavati's sons could become the rulers, realized he had to renounce his own claim to the throne and took a vow of celibacy, becoming known as Bhishma.
