😵 🥜Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction affecting 2 systems or more. This is a medical emergency EVEN IF an epi pen improves it. This is because the allergic reaction can have a rebound effect.

Epinephrine is CRUCIAL to be given AS SOON as the symptoms start, as this will stop the momentum of the reaction.

👩‍🏫Think of it this way: An allergen (ex peanut) is the arch-nemesis of your immune system. When the allergen is detected it goes nuclear and immediately dumps all its (natural) chemicals (like histamine & leukotrienes) into your system. This very rapidly causes your blood vessels to become leaky which leads to constriction of your airway and lungs (problems breathing), flushing or swelling of the mucosa (face swelling, throat swelling), disrupts the gi system (vomiting, diarrhea), low blood pressure (passing out, light headed) and eventually decreased oxygenation and even death. (Only 2 systems are needed to be affected to be anaphylaxis)

Epinephrine is the antidote to the allergen but must be given ASAP before the (natural) chemical that your body dumps have a chance to dissipate.
