Can you treat gallstones without surgery? For stones that have passed into the bile duct from the gallbladder, we do have advanced endoscopic treatment called ERCP with cholangioscopy and laser lithotripsy. In this procedure, we pass a small camera tube through your mouth. It’s a completely endoscopic procedure, and we use a laser to break the stone.
However, this is applicable only for stones that have moved from the gallbladder into the bile duct. Unfortunately, for stones that remain in the gallbladder, removing just the stone is not a permanent solution because there is a tendency for stones to form again. Therefore, undergoing a laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery is the recommended treatment.
