What is Impasto? How to Make Impasto Acrylic Paint

In this video, we’ll teach you how to create thick and textured impasto acrylic paint. Impasto paint helps create textured paintings with a thick, buildable nature.
What is impasto?
Impasto means that the acrylic paint you’re using has a texture due to its thickness. Paint of this type gives paint a buildable structure, which may be desirable to some painters. To bulk up paint that isn’t thick enough on its own, you’ll need to add a heavy body gel medium.

How do you make impasto?
Add impasto medium to the paint you’d like to use to make impasto. It adds body and thickness to it. Always refer to the label to know how much to add and how to best use that particular product. Though the gel may look like white paint, it will dry clear and not affect the color of your paint. Each gel medium has a specific type of finish, so pay attention to the label. High gloss will be very shiny, whereas matte will have a dull finish.

Here’s how to thicken paint:
Check out the label of your impasto medium before you begin, and gather the paint colors you would like to thicken. We are using Liquitex Professional Acrylic Medium Gloss Heavy Gel, which will dry with a nice shine. According to this product’s label, we can thin it two ways: by adding water or gloss medium. This gel can be watered down by 25%, meaning it’s effective even if you add water or medium equal to a quarter of the product's volume.
