হামাস (Hamas) হলো একটি ফিলিস্তিনি ইসলামপন্থী রাজনৈতিক ও সামরিক সংগঠন, যা ১৯৮৭ সালে প্রথম ইন্তিফাদার সময় প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। এর পুরো নাম হলো “হারাকাত আল-মুকাওয়ামা আল-ইসলামিয়া”, যার অর্থ “ইসলামী প্রতিরোধ আন্দোলন”। হামাসের মূল লক্ষ্য হলো ফিলিস্তিনকে একটি স্বাধীন ইসলামী রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠা করা এবং ইসরায়েলের অস্তিত্বকে অস্বীকার করা। এটি গাজা উপত্যকার প্রধান রাজনৈতিক শক্তি হিসেবে বিবেচিত, যেখানে তারা ২০০৭ সাল থেকে কার্যত শাসন চালিয়ে আসছে।

হামাসের দুটি শাখা রয়েছে: একটি রাজনৈতিক শাখা, যেটি নির্বাচনে অংশগ্রহণ করে ও প্রশাসনিক কাজ পরিচালনা করে; অন্যটি সামরিক শাখা, যার নাম ইজ্জাদ্দিন আল-কাসসাম ব্রিগেড। এই সামরিক শাখাটি ইসরায়েলের বিরুদ্ধে রকেট হামলা এবং অন্যান্য সশস্ত্র প্রতিরোধে যুক্ত। আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে হামাসকে বিভিন্ন রাষ্ট্র ও সংস্থা সন্ত্রাসী সংগঠন হিসেবে ঘোষণা করেছে, তবে কিছু দেশ হামাসকে রাজনৈতিক শক্তি হিসেবেও গণ্য করে।

হামাস ফিলিস্তিনের জনগণের মধ্যে কিছুটা জনপ্রিয়তা ধরে রেখেছে তাদের সমাজসেবা কার্যক্রম ও ইসরায়েলের বিরুদ্ধে দৃঢ় অবস্থানের কারণে। তবে তাদের কৌশল ও সহিংসতা নিয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক মহলে ব্যাপক বিতর্ক রয়েছে।

Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist political and militant organization founded in 1987 during the First Intifada, as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. Its name is an acronym for "Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah," meaning "Islamic Resistance Movement." Hamas aims to establish an Islamic state in historic Palestine, opposing the existence of Israel. It combines religious, social, and military components, operating schools, clinics, and charities in the Gaza Strip, where it gained significant popularity for providing services that the Palestinian Authority struggled to deliver.

In 2006, Hamas won a majority in the Palestinian legislative elections and took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007 after violent clashes with Fatah. Since then, Gaza has been under Hamas' de facto rule, marked by repeated conflicts with Israel. The group is designated as a terrorist organization by countries including the United States, Israel, and the European Union, due to its use of suicide bombings, rocket attacks, and other forms of violence against civilians.

While Hamas claims resistance against occupation as its central mission, its tactics and hardline stance have drawn international criticism. Internally, its governance has faced accusations of authoritarianism and repression. The organization remains a deeply polarizing force in Palestinian politics and the broader Middle East conflict.
