In this episode of TheBizWatch, we explore the outlook for the banking sector in 2020 and beyond.

We present the data analysed by Charts.lk, an independent statistical consultants on market & economy, on private sector credit growth and its behaviour in line with the economic growth and the rising NPLs of the banking sector during the last few years to better understand where it could be heading in 2020 and beyond.

In our interviews with Dimantha Mathews, the Head of Research for Investments in Fixed Income & Equity at First Capital Holdings and Ajith Nivard Cabraal, the Senior Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister, we discuss the sector's expected growth and what could drive that growth, earnings potential and capital & liquidity amid the recent changes in to the sector classification by the Central Bank.

We also discussed whether the sector could arrest the rising NPLs in the sector in 2020.

Despite the broader positive outlook for the sector, we drew special emphasis on if the implemented loan moratorium and the credit support scheme for the SMEs could turn the banks more conservative in looking at new loans.

We also asked the former Central Bank Governor, if the new administration is keen in re-mooting the industry consolidation.
